Plumpton Racecourse recognises that gambling is closely associated with horseracing and is a popular raceday activity.  We actively work with our betting partners to support the policies they have in place, to encourage responsible gambling and meet the objectives of the Gambling Act 2005, which are:

• Preventing gambling from being a source of crime or disorder, being associated with crime or disorder or being used to support crime.
• Ensuring that gambling is conducted in a fair and open way.
• Protecting children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by gambling.

We encourage our bookmaking sponsors to adhere to the Gambling Industry Code for Socially Responsible Advertising, and ensure that all promotional material produced by the racecourse also complies with this code.

2)       Drinking

Whilst “having a few drinks” can be seen as part of the raceday experience, Plumpton Racecourse encourages responsible drinking.  We achieve this by working with our catering partners and supporting the policies which they have in place, and asking them to support our policies. 

Plumpton Racecourseencourages our customers to take a responsible attitude towards drinking and driving and makes sure that details regarding taxis and public transport are readily available. 

3)       Animal Welfare

Animal welfare is a subject taken very seriously by Plumpton Racecourse and we promote practices put in place to safeguard horse welfare. 

Repeated research projects, conducted in most of the leading racing countries, have shown unequivocally that the racing surface is the single factor that most influences the risk of a serious injury to horses in a race.  The relationship between serious musculoskeletal injuries and firmness of the racing surface is virtually linear.  As a consequence, PlumptonRacecourse operates in line with the requirements of the British Horseracing Authority target conditions for ideal ground. 

 4)       Environmental Effects

Plumpton Racecourse is aware of the environmental effects of our actions, such as abstracting water for irrigation/ use of wood for fences and hurdles/ the effect or chemicals such as fertilisers.  We aim to limit these effects by abstracting only when necessary/replanting trees/ protection of the watercourse and bird habitats. 

In addition, Plumpton Racecourse has a variety of waste recycling measures in place, including the recycling of office materials and recycling of raceday items such as racecards, betting slips, drinks cans/containers etc.

5)       Substance Abuse

Plumpton Racecourse looks to tackle substance abuse in our community by supporting companies and charities who work with those with substance abuse problems.

6)       Family Facilities

Plumpton Racecourse has facilities in place for baby feeding and changing.

7)       Charity Involvement

Plumpton Racecourse has involvement with a number of charities in the local area and within racing to promote the links between racecourses and the surrounding community as well as national and international charities. 

Examples of this include the Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre, which is celebrating the 14th Anniversary of its raceday at Plumpton in 2013, having raised more than £500,000 from it’s annual Plumpton raceday lunch since 2000.

The Children’s Trust is also one of our charity partners, who organise a Mascot Champion Hurdle race as part of our Family Day’s entertainments.

8)       Community Links

Plumpton Racecourse is keen to develop and maintain strong links with the local community and local charities.   We are involved in the Plumpton Village Action Plan which includes support of community initiatives developed in direct response to the needs identified by the village.

In addition, Plumpton Racecourse provides support for education and training of local people in racecourse related activities by providing work experience opportunities for groundstaff, and office staff. 

Plumpton Racecourse is pleased to support The British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust (BHEST) Racing to School Programme for schoolchildren between the ages of 4 and 18 to allow them to become aware of horseracing as a spectator sport and a career path. 

9)       Employee Welfare and Development

In addition to the welfare of our customers and the local community, Plumpton Racecourseis also committed to the welfare of our staff.  We provide good working conditions and a safe working environment as well as, providing social opportunities for the staff and ensuring that a healthy work/life balance is maintained. 

Plumpton Racecourse also invests in the education and training of our staff to enhance their skills and assist in developing their careers, and is Investors in People accredited. 

10)     Chaplaincy

Via the charity Racing Welfare, the Racing Industry has it’s own Chaplain, Reverend Graham Locking.  Plumpton Racecoursemay invite Reverend Locking to be available at race meetings to provide assistance and counselling to racegoers and racing professionals as necessary.  We may also invite ministers from other Religions to attend as and when deemed appropriate. 

11)     Disability

In line with the Disability Discrimination Act Plumpton Racecoursetakes reasonable measures to ensure that our disabled customers are able to access and enjoy a day at the races in the same way as an able bodied person. 

12)     Discrimination

Plumpton Racecourselooks to combat discrimination and promote a policy that all staff, customers and members of the local community will be regarded equally and given equal opportunities regardless of their age, sex, race, colour, sexual orientation, religion or belief, ethnic origin, nationality, marital status or disability.
