Plumpton Breaks in New Marketing Executive
Martyn Collins our new Marketing Executive looks back over the last two months, in what has been a whirlwind of events. Arriving with very limited racing knowledge, fresh out of university he has been thrown in at Grade 1 level instead of the bumpers! How has he fared?
Two months ago, fresh from the festive period raring to go in a new job I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Coming from working in an agency for the last 6 months it was certainly a new environment and one that I had very limited knowledge about, however much I tried to read and watch before I arrived. Horse racing had been something that I only watched during the Cheltenham festival or the odd occasion when I was in a bookies and the Grand National was on, always worth a flutter however little I knew! That being said, 4 days into the new role we had one of the biggest race days of the year at Plumpton, The ‘At The Races Sussex National’ – thrown in at the deep end!
Since then I have watched, read and absorbed more about the sport than I think I would have ever envisaged! Four race days and an abandonment on my CV to date; it has been a steep learning curve. The job role has also been something of a challenge. Having the knowledge from university and now learning how to use it under the brilliant knowledge, guidance and patience of Dan (the CEO) its amazing how much I’ve learnt in such a small space of time.
So, what have I learnt. Granted I’ve only taken baby steps, but I can already see the draw that horse racing has, both jump and flat (obviously here at Plumpton we prefer jumps!). The fact that it is a whole day out for anyone and there are at least 6 or even 7 races to experience, it means you can be involved as much or as little as you want. The elegance and speed of each and every horse is incredible. Being lucky enough to stand in the paddock and see a lot of horses so close-up, I am still in awe of how big, powerful and elegant they are.
What do I hope to bring to Plumpton? I plan to add some new ideas in terms of ways we can entice our ‘punters’, families and race goers new and old through the gates, with the aim of enhancing their experience of each and every race day, as well as delivering a fresh approach to Plumptons social media and advertising proposition. All of these will in turn increase the popularity and exposure of Plumpton, so that more people can come and see why its considered by a lot of people to be their favourite course. This being backed up by the announcement of being voted ‘Best Small Racecourse in the South’ by the Racegoers, its definitely a racecourse everyone has to visit at least once!
Here’s to a successful and enjoyable venture. I look forward to meeting lots of you over my time here. Let’s hope I add something to Plumpton with a fresh pair or eyes and little bit of youth! Please do come and say ‘hello’ if you see me around on raceday, and any advice and constructive suggestions on how we can improve are always welcome.
