We recently chatted to Andy Clifton, one of Teddy Blue’s owners, on what it was like to win the Sussex Champion Hurdle last year….

“Easter Sunday 2023 at Plumpton Racecourse was one of the best days I have ever had on a racecourse. Having worked in racing for 35 years in a variety of different roles, it has been an amazing experience to own Teddy Blue alongside three great mates, but for us to win the BetGoodwin Sussex Champion Hurdle, with friends and family present, was on a different level.

I think it’s fair to say that Teddy is a character. He had to be walked to the start by Jamie Moore, and for most of the first circuit he looked more likely to be pulled up than win the race. However, brilliantly trained by Gary Moore, a man of few words but every one of them worth listening to, and given a great ride by Jamie, somehow he got home by a short head to spark huge celebrations. It was even more poignant in retrospect that Teddy Blue’s win last year was one of Jamie’s last big winners before injury forced him to retire.

We are looking forward to have another crack at the race this year, all being well, but this season has not gone entirely according to plan, and with the prize money increased by 50% from 2023, it’s going to be much tougher, especially with the entries from Dan Skelton and Paul Nicholls who are fighting out the British Jump trainers championship. However, win, lose or draw I’m sure we’ll have another great day at Plumpton, where everyone gets a warm welcome from Craig and every member of the team.”…
